THE ROLE
SchoolKit is seeking independent contractors to serve as Early Literacy Coaches to support teachers in Arkansas schools in grades K-3. Early Literacy Coach duties include providing coaching (onsite) to teachers delivering instruction aligned to high-quality literacy instructional materials, with a focus on both the skill and comprehension strands of instruction. 

Coaches will:
  • Use tools and approaches developed by SchoolKit and the Arkansas Department of Education to help teachers deepen their knowledge of the research behind how students learn to read and their instructional materials;
  • Build teachers’ capacity to engage in effective instructional planning and internalization using this research and these materials, and help improve their delivery of instruction aligned to the research and the materials;
  • Observe classroom instruction and provide informal feedback to teachers;
  • Deliver short professional learning sessions based on unique teacher and school needs;
  • Lead or support teacher collaborative planning time with a focus on the district-selected materials;
  • Support teachers to respond from data from curriculum-specific assessments;
  • Support with gathering student performance data and the completion and submission of monthly progress reports;
  • Share information with school leaders about early literacy instructional efforts and support leaders to oversee literacy instruction as needed/as requested; and
  • Report to a SchoolKit staff member on a regular basis to share updates on their work and receive resources and guidance.  
Each coach will be assigned a minimum of 28 days of onsite coaching (roughly 4 days per month) and 8 total days of remote coaching per school from September 2023- April 2024.  If interested, coaches can sign up to support multiple schools.

EXPERIENCE
  • 6+ years of experience in education (at least 4 years of teaching and at least 2 years of this experience in an instructional coach or teacher leadership role)
  • A successful track record of supporting teachers to improve their early literacy practice through effective instructional planning and delivery
  • Experience with teaching high-quality instructional materials in early literacy 
  • Knowledge of and experience providing recommendations on the full range of decisions that teachers can make at the classroom level to improve instruction
  • Foundational knowledge of best practices for teacher coaching in literacy
  • A bachelor’s degree, Masters degree in education or related field preferred

LOCATION
Candidates who live near or within commuting distance of Little Rock and Fort Smith, Arkansas will receive preference for this role. Candidates who must fly to these cities will also be considered for the role.  

COMPENSATION
This is a 1099 contractor position and candidates who are selected will be independent contractors of SchoolKit. As such, they will be paid $90 - $110 an hour for preparation to coach, remote coaching, and $800 - $1000 per day of onsite coaching or facilitation.  Rates are highly dependent on experience.
